Athletics Hall of Fame
Asbury began its Hall of Fame with the inaugural class of 2004. The program enshrines those individuals who have made significant contributions to our intercollegiate athletic program during their time at Asbury College and those individuals who graduate from Asbury and continue athletic success elsewhere.
The First Class: 2004
Dr. Tom Harper '64 - 30 years of service to the HPERA department; 6 tennis Coach of the Year honors.
David Penalva '78 - Asbury's first All-American who starred for the Eagles in the 1970's. During his time at Asbury, the soccer team qualified for national tournaments and defeated NCAA programs such as the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville.
Rita Pritchett '69 - 20 years as Asbury's volleyball coach who also coached tennis, soccer, softball, and track and field. Named athletic director in 1989, giving her the distinction of being the first female athletic director in the state of Kentucky.
Steve Smith '77 - Head basketball coach of the prestigious Oak Hill Academy Prep in Mouth of Wilson, Va., after an accomplished athletic career at Asbury College.
Winston Smith '50 - Helped begin the Asbury athletic program and served as Asbury's first basketball coach.
Kathryn Cochran-Wiggam '95 - Only Asbury athlete to earn four letters in three different sports: basketball, softball, and tennis.
Cecil Zweifel - Founder of Asbury College athletics; Asbury's winningest soccer coach, long-time baseball coach, and early athletic director. Coach Zweifel and the 1977 Asbury men's soccer team made the decision to not play in the NAIA championships due to the championship game scheduled for a Sunday. The decision resulted in a new rule barring Sunday championships in the NAIA, a rule still in policy use today.
The 2005 Class:
Neal Butler '89 - Outstanding cross-country runner at Asbury; coached the women's cross country team to the NAIA nationals three times; Region XII Coach of the Year three times.
Stan Wiggam '69 - Started Asbury's cross-country program in 1971, serving as coach until 1983. Wiggam was named NAIA District 32 Coach of the Year numerous times. Served as Asbury's tumbling team coach for 18 years. Served as Director of Athletics from 1983-85.
The 2006 Class:
Barbara Crouse '69 - Founder of the Asbury swimming program. Involved in Asbury athletics as an athlete and coach from 1965 to 2001. Crouse qualified numerous swimmers for regional and national events despite sub-standard facilities. Also served as the women's tennis coach.
Jason Price '00 - Asbury's all-time leading scorer in men's basketball with 2,865 points. Led the NAIA in scoring his senior season with 955 points, a 25.8 points per game average. The accomplishment earned Price an honorable mention selection to the 2000 All-NAIA Team. Price currently works as an assistant coach for the men's basketball team.
Tonya Maupin '94 Webb - First female athlete to have a jersey retired in the Luce Center. Ranks in the top four of 11 offensive categories for the history of Asbury's volleyball program. Four-year selection to the KWIC All-Tournament team.
